Will AI replace teachers? I train for a living, and I think it will

I earn my living from training.

Which means it is directly in my interest to tell you "don't worry, teachers can't be replaced" and end the article there. That is what most people writing on this subject do, and you deserve to know I am writing against my own interest.

Because I can see what is happening. In my own work, not in a report I read.

How I started to believe it#

Two years ago I used AI to help with a presentation. An idea here, a phrasing there.

Today? I ask it for the whole deck. Structure, content, sequence, examples. And it comes out good. All that is left is for me to stand up and deliver it.

Sit with that sentence for a second: all that is left is the delivery.

And if delivery is all that remains, what stops a system from delivering too? Technically, nothing. The voice exists. The face exists. Interactivity is coming. And interactivity was the last argument I was holding on to.

A confession#

Here is something another trainer might not say.

Sometimes, standing in the room, someone asks me a question completely outside the topic. I am the expert here; I am supposed to know. But I do not memorise everything, and nobody does.

So what do I do? I quietly ask the AI, take the idea, and deliver it in my own way.

Is that cheating? I do not think so. The idea landed, the phrasing was mine, and judging whether it was right was mine. But I know exactly what happened in that moment: the tool knew, and I delivered.

When you think about that, you will understand why I cannot write you a reassuring article.

So what is left?#

One thing, and it is real. I am not offering it as consolation.

The relationship.

Someone noticing you stopped asking questions two weeks ago. Someone saying "this is below your standard" and being believed, because they know you and their opinion matters to you. Watching how a person behaves when they make a mistake in front of you.

None of that is information. And it does not travel through a generated voice, however natural.

But be honest with me: what proportion of teaching today is that? And what proportion is delivering information to thirty people?

My own estimate is that the second is much larger. And the second is what goes.

When?#

I do not know. Months or years, nobody honestly knows.

What I do know is that the speed has surprised me twice already. Once when the whole deck became possible, and once when the voice became convincing. Somebody surprised twice should not bet on slow.

And me?#

I train people in AI. Which means I teach people the tool that may end my profession.

That bothers me less than you would expect, because the alternative, waiting quietly for the wave to arrive, is not a better plan.

One small conviction survives: someone who understands what they teach is not easily replaced, and someone recycling slides they memorised five years ago was already replaceable long before AI arrived.

Yes, I think a large part of teaching and training will be done by AI. And I see that in my own work rather than in a report.

A small, precious part stays human. Whoever invests in it stays. Whoever does not was selling something that just became free.

Try this today: open the last presentation or lesson you delivered and ask yourself honestly which part of it a system could not do. That answer will shape your next few years more than any article.
